EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. In short, it’s a way of processing trauma and past experiences that keep you stuck in the past, impacting your ability to live your life.

Now, you might be thinking, “I don’t have trauma. Nothing bad happened to me.”

But trauma isn’t necessarily something that happened. It can be the things that didn’t happen, like not getting your emotional needs met in childhood or feeling like no one wanted to be your friend at school.

EMDR was initially developed specifically for traumatic experiences. We now use it to treat a multitude of things like anxiety, negative body image, grief, negative core beliefs, eating concerns, and behaviors you’d like to decrease (like spending way too much time checking email on your phone!).

Here’s how it works…

We’ll use what’s coming up in the present – thoughts, feelings, body sensations, etc. – to “float back” to an earlier time when you felt this way. This is how we get to the root of what you’re experiencing now.

Once we’ve identified the specific memories to work on, we’ll “target” each one to desensitize you to that experience.

What do I mean by “desensitize”?

It means that once we’ve reprocessed these memories, you’ll be able to think about them without feeling as upset or bothered as you would have before doing EMDR.

And this might be the best part…

We can work on stuff, and you’ll feel better without having to talk about it in detail!

We’re used to talking things through, which can sometimes be super helpful. But for trauma, this is only one part of the healing process.

The impact of trauma – or negative experiences in general – gets stuck in the body. Using a somatic (or body-based) approach helps stored memories move through and get reorganized so that they are no longer taking over your life.

Are you ready to give it a try?

This is a highly researched, evidence-based treatment for trauma (and the other things I mentioned, too!).

I know that trying new things can be scary, but I’ll be with you every step. Plus, we never just jump in. We’ll start by making sure you have tools to help you feel calm and grounded if things get to be too much. And we’ll only do a little at a time.

You can do this!
